September 2: Calendar Adjustment Day

No, this day is not about getting more organized.  September 2 commemorates a truly momentous occasion.  Following the British Calendar Act of 1751, Britain adopted the Gregorian Calendar in 1752. However, the current Julian calendar system required them to drop eleven days in order to sync themselves with the proposed Gregorian Calendar. So, on the evening of the 2nd of September 1752, the population of Britain and all its colonies (including America) went to sleep and awoke the next morning to the 14th of September 1752.

The changeover is also responsible for New Year's Day being celebrated on January 1, whereas it has always been celebrated on March 26th under the Julian Calendar.  Riots ensued on the morning after from people demanding they be given their 11 days back.  Sorry kids, life doesn't work that way.  We don't get "lost days" back.  Time spent is time gone.  No refunds allowed.

This fact may have been what prompted Paul to write in Ephesians 5:15-17, "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise, making the best used of the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore, do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is."

Today, reflect on how you use your time.  How much is devoted to social media, entertainment, or simple diversions that eat up our time?  What one change could you make that would allow for greater devotion to God's glory and to advancing His Kingdom?  It's entirely possible that over the course of the next year, with one small adjustment to your daily schedule, you could actually gain an additional 11 days worth of valuable time.  Happy Calendar Adjustment Day!
